Editor’s Note: Our Masters Preview Issue was printed afore the cessation of the 2020 Masters. Read added actuality >>
We don't consistently put the arresting best on the awning of our Masters Issue, but this was a foregone conclusion. The assignment for the awning adventure began the moment that fifth blooming anorak was slipped on Tiger’s shoulders, and the accountability of a abounding decade aerial off. In the afterwards canicule and weeks, as the declarations reverberated above Twitter that golf was adored and would never be the same, accidental editors John Huggan and Dave Shedloski, forth with GOLFTV’s Henni Zuël, agilely set about interviewing anybody who was abutting to the activity while memories were sharp. This careful alpha was followed with a abiding accomplishment to aggregate alike added choir as the division wore on. Their articulate history of Woods’ win, with contributions from our Daniel Rapaport and John Strege, took a year to make. Posterity was in mind, but we achievement you adore it now.
Tiger’s beam on the awning belies world-class exhaustion. We captured this angel in Jupiter, Fla., the aboriginal anniversary of November, not too abounding hours afterwards Woods had affected bottomward from Japan with his record-tying 82nd PGA Tour bays as a carry-on. Somewhat shamelessly, we milked every moment we could, putting Tiger through the paces of stills, video and sit-down interviews over a abounding day, bisected of it in the hot sun. At the actual least, we kept a abiding accumulation of beginning shirts, baptize and Diet Coke his way.
Beside this folio is Valentino Dixon’s color-pencil aberration of the awning photo attempt by Walter Iooss Jr. As you ability remember, Dixon—who from abaft the walls of Attica Correctional beatific us assets like letters in a canteen to accompany absorption to his blameworthy annihilation conviction—recently absolved chargeless afterwards 27 years and was Golf Digest’s bedfellow illustrator at the 2019 Masters. Although Dixon wasn’t there on Sunday to attestant history—he larboard Augusta on Friday to appear the National Innocence Network Conference in Atlanta, again flew home to Buffalo to watch the final annular on TV with his mother—his role deserves mention. Fate did agitate abnormally aloft Rae’s Creek aftermost year, which he has sketched as the bolt of Tiger’s polo.

When Valentino and I accustomed on Tuesday, the aboriginal abode we went was Amen Corner. It had been a photo of the par-3 12th, brought by Attica’s warden, that aboriginal sparked Dixon’s absurd absorption with golf. During his accomplished abounding decade, Dixon spent added hours cartoon this aperture than any other. So to assuredly see these acreage in absolute sunlight, to apperceive the accurate spatial accord of the greens and tee boxes and acceptable pines, to see the aerial moss growing on the Hogan Bridge, was absolutely a affair for him.
On Wednesday at the golf writers’ dinner, Dixon accomplished a dream by giving his admired golfer a active print—a cartoon of Augusta’s 12th, of course. Dixon told Woods, who was there to accept the Ben Hogan Award, “You’re gonna win this week.” To which Woods responded, “I’ll do my best. But I’m activity to accept to exhausted this guy appropriate here,” and nudged Brooks Koepka, there to accept the accolade for 2018 Player of the Year.

Of course, Tiger’s consistently a pre-tournament favorite. Aftermost year a nongolf able from Wisconsin bet about all his activity accumulation on Tiger and won $1.19 million. And with what added golfer would Dixon, an ultimate alien to the game, possibly acquisition affinity? But admit, the clash was absitively rather eerily at the 12th, area four of the final six players in altercation on Sunday rinsed tee shots, including Koepka, who angry for second. If you can’t accept the intertwined abracadabra of Tiger and Valentino’s alongside and long-awaited redemptions, again your acuteness is about forth the basal of Rae’s Creek.
Since Augusta, Dixon has connected to biking at a corybantic clip to accomplish up for absent time. He has been to Australia, Europe, Canada and abundant of the United States. He has water-skied, approved sushi, swam with dolphins, visited a balderdash ranch, you name it. But frivolous, he’s not. Forth the way, he’s bearing and hosting a YouTube video series, “Draw and Talk With Me,” area he inspires guests to acquisition their aesthetic aptitude while acid amusing issues. His guests accept included above NFL brilliant Ronde Barber, a chic of Parkinson’s sufferers, a Buffalo badge administrator and abounding more. His appetite goes far above acceptable a accusation adjoin the burghal of Buffalo and Erie County, which has been filed.
Dixon will be at the 2020 Masters, this time at the allurement of Augusta Mayor Hardie Davis Jr., who is proclaiming April 6 in his burghal Valentino Dixon Day. “The resiliency Mr. Dixon has apparent in activity from tragedy to triumph, that is aloof like the spirit of the Masters Tournament,” Davis says.
Amen.
