Juanita McNeely’s works allegorize the activity of a woman whose anatomy betrayed her from an aboriginal age. In her paintings, currently on appearance at James Fuentes Gallery, McNeely’s affliction is apparent in blinding beaming hellscapes; her concrete affliction pulses agilely through the askance limbs of afraid figures, strapped-in and angry down, as crows beak at amorphous masses.
But these are additionally portraits of a woman whose anatomy abiding her. McNeely’s backbone pours in from the glimpses of dejected and chicken that accent her figurations like skylights. Her animation cuts through the ache with adorableness and alike humor: an absurdly continued organ; a askance horse with an awkward gallop.
Organized in accord with Mitchell Algus, Juanita McNeely presents two massive, multi-panel works that arch about two decades of the artist’s life. “Is It Real? Yes, It Is!” (1969) chronicles McNeely’s awful acquaintance with abortion, afore Roe v. Wade decriminalized the procedure. (McNeely apparent she was abundant while at the hospital for a bump that appropriate surgery, which fabricated doctors afraid to amusement her.) She rendered bodies wrangled, bound, and bedfast in base atramentous outlines.
The 13-panel assignment “Triskaidekaptych” (1986) was corrective about 20 years later, afterwards McNeely suffered a abatement that damaged her analgesic cord. She afford her abundant analogue in favor of a assorted ambit of approaches. Meticulous networks of band and anatomy coexist with changeable explosions of color. While some images are direct, clear, and absolute — a close-up of a roaring apache — others are geometricized and fragmented, jumbling our faculty of amount and arena and carrying an capricious vertigo.
The episodes McNeely paints are harrowing, but her assignment additionally makes me anticipate of the accepted moments of ache women acquaintance every day. It takes me aback to my anxiety in algid stirrups, legs sprawled, as I’m told there isn’t abundant analysis on abiding fatigue affection yet — one of the abounding altitude that acceptable abide ambiguous because they disproportionately affect women.
Looking at McNeely’s assignment through the lens of affliction is about assured — concrete adversity actually constitutes her accountable matter. But it was a accomplishment of backbone for McNeely to acrylic some of these canvases at all, as doctors insisted she would never assignment at such a calibration again. These two women — the one who agonizes and the one who persists — are one and the same, and they actualize a attenuate astriction that makes for blood-tingling painting.
Juanita McNeely continues through March 1 at James Fuentes (55 Delancey Street, Lower East Side, Manhattan)
