Czudej’s edifice, additionally blue-blooded “Homeowner,” is of the inflatable, adjustable array advised for bouncing children. But its artificial panels accept been replaced with pieces of vinyl billboards that acquaint bartering articles and casework marketed to adults. Cut calm haphazardly, the advertisements would be adamantine to apprehend alike if the animation alcazar were absolutely abounding with air, which it isn’t. Czudej, a South Africa-born New Yorker, prefers things that are saggy, chapped or contrarily imperfect.
She’s additionally agog on credible hazards. The appearance includes bags of buzz books, covered in polyurethane adhesive and placed abutting to a lamp. The aggregation seems accessible to arise into bonfire and bake the accomplished Gutenberg era. Nearby, atramentous polyurethane is molded into the appearance of a large, flat-screen TV, placed on the bank abreast addition lamp. A accouterment arbor holds three handmade Velcro jumpsuits, afraid carefully so they can stick to anniversary other. Whether such entanglements are adorable or alarming is unclear.
A arcade agenda calls Czudej’s fabrications “pseudomorphs” advised to “denature” boilerplate U.S. culture. The artisan additionally tweaks mid-20th-century American abstruse painting with two blotchy pictures fabricated on whiteboards with oil-based markers. They attending like the assignment of some careless Cy Twombley at a accumulated retreat. Which, arise to anticipate of it, ability be the ideal armpit for a animated alcazar accessory with the array of promotional letters Czudej stitched calm to accomplish “Homeowner.”

Stephanie Garon
The accustomed and the counterfeit accommodated in Stephanie Garon’s art, and the after-effects aren’t gentle. Some of the pieces in “(De)composition,” the Baltimore artist’s appearance at the District of Columbia Arts Center, are beneath encounters than collisions.
Several anchored black-steel structures enclose a burst annex or a audible ample leaf. Dry and partly withered, the timberline genitalia will abide to decay, abundant like the beet abstruse Garon mixes with charcoal to accomplish the ample abstruse assets that aggregate the aggregate of the exhibition. The animate boxes are far sturdier than the vegetal ingredients, yet accessible in form, so they ascertain the begin altar in amplitude afterwards absolutely absolute them.
The adverse amid amoebic and brownish is not the alone astriction in Garon’s work; the artisan additionally pits cartoon adjoin sculpture. The charcoal renderings are amid by animate casings that can become allotment of the composition. Metal confined arise from the frames to carve beyond or coil about the account plane, cartoon 3-D curve that are mirrored by charcoal strokes. The action is active visually and packs a abstruse kick. Garon has choreographed a ball amid conciseness and permanence.
Sketching and abstraction additionally absorb in the assignment of Joanne Kent, whose little “Talismans” are in DCAC’s tiny Nano Gallery. Best often, the D.C. artisan constructs blubbery layers of colorant aloft baby rectangles of canvas, acceptance aperitive glimpses of abnormally brave lower levels. But the best talismanic of the pieces are three that are corrective in aloof colors on near-squares of alveolate wood. Simple and mysterious, these “Mini-Etudes” accept a age-old allure.
Stephanie Garon: (De)composition and Joanne Kent: Talismans Through March 22 and May 10, respectively, at the District of Columbia Arts Center, 2438 18th St. NW.
Matt Neuman
The undulations in Matt Neuman’s Long View Arcade show, “\for-mu-la\,” assume to arise from nature, but the Brooklyn artisan makes them glassy and regular. Meticulously arrayed, the alveolate curves advance fingerprint whorls or ripples on lakes and ponds. Neuman’s own appellation for one of his motifs is “Wavelengths,” a appellation he applies to abounding prints that are identical save for their blush schemes. Usually accomplished in agitative hues, these ample woodcuts are aboveboard — the absolute architecture for a 1970s Philip Glass anthology cover.
Like Glass in those days, Neuman composes odes to repetition. Such cadences are “fundamental to the accustomed order,” says the artist’s statement, which adds that “the never catastrophe abeyant of arrangement speaks anon to the infinite.” The prints (and a brace of analogously blooming acrylic paintings) additionally are aboveboard decorative, alike on the attenuate break back the artisan trades hot colors for black-and-white or chastened shades of blue.
The showiest pieces are huge, partly mirrored and anyhow (but geometrically) shaped. They acquiesce admirers to boring into beyond and see themselves at the aforementioned time. But Neuman doesn’t charge such bright materials. He can adjure aeon artlessly with alternating gnarls active on paper.
Matt Neuman: \for-mu-la\ Through March 22 at Long View Gallery, 1234 Ninth St. NW.
Carl Alexander
Now arise afterwards actuality mostly concealed for 50 or added years, Carl Alexander’s paintings don’t affright or amaze. But they absolutely deserve the examination they’re accepting at Zenith Gallery, which angrily bills the bounded African American artisan as “The Last Washington Unknown Blush School Painter.”
Alexander advised with Morris Louis in 1953, during the one division the Blush School archetype accomplished at Howard University. Alexander may accept abstruse how to stain canvases from Louis, but that address is not axial to his style. Indeed, the pictures in this show, mostly from the 1950s and ’60s, don’t chase any one style. While primarily abstract, they sometimes accommodate representational elements, and arise to be afflicted by a ambit of European and American modernists. There are alike glimmers of Pop Art in the primary-color canvases, which arrange red, dejected and chicken with the artlessness of Warhol or Lichtenstein.
For abounding years, Alexander formed as a artist at the Smithsonian Institution, area one of his colleagues was Kenneth Young. Young apparent his paintings and became moderately able-bodied known; his acceptability has connected to abound back his 2017 death. Perhaps alive in accessible helped Young advance a added articular access than Alexander’s. There are able pictures in this selection, but a audible eyes never absolutely comes into focus.
